Microsoft Excel allows you to change the layout of a Pivot Table using PivotTable Tools > Design > Report Layout menu commands. You can change the layout in these three forms:

Show in Compact Form

Show in Outline Form

Show in Tabular Form

Aspose.Cells also provides PivotTable.ShowInCompactForm(), PivotTable.ShowInOutlineForm(), and PivotTable.ShowInTabularForm() methods to change the layout of the Pivot Table in these three forms.

The following sample code first shows the Pivot Table in Compact Form, then shows it in Outline Form, and finally shows it in Tabular Form.

Pivot Table Appearance

How to Create a Pivot Table explains how to create a simple pivot table. This article describes how to customize a pivot table’s appearance by setting various properties:

Pivot table format options

Pivot fields format options

Data field format options

Setting Pivot Table Format Options

The PivotTable class controls the overall pivot table and can be formatted in a number of ways.

Setting the AutoFormat Type

Microsoft Excel offers a number of different pre‑set report formats. Aspose.Cells supports these formatting options too. To access them:

Set PivotTable.IsAutoFormat to true.

Assign a formatting option from the PivotTableAutoFormatType enumeration.

Setting Format Options

The code sample below shows how to format the pivot table to show grand totals for rows and columns, how to set the report’s field order, and how to set a custom string for null values.

Formatting Look and Feel Manually

To format how the pivot table report looks manually, instead of using pre‑set report formats, use the PivotTable.Format() and PivotTable.FormatAll() methods. Create a style object for your desired formatting, for example:

Setting Pivot Field Format Options

The PivotField class represents a field in a pivot table and can be formatted in a number of ways. The code sample below shows how to:

Access row fields.

Set subtotals.

Set autosort.

Set autoshow.

Setting Row/Column/Page Fields Format

Setting Data Fields Format

The code sample below shows how to set display formats and number format for data fields.

Clearing Pivot Fields

The PivotFieldCollection has a method named Clear() that allows you to clear pivot fields. Use it when you want to clear all the pivot fields in the areas, for example, page, column, row, or data.
The code sample below shows how to clear all the pivot fields in a data area.

Sometimes, you want to format pivot table cells. For example, you want to apply background color to pivot table cells. Aspose.Cells provides two methods PivotTable::FormatAll() and PivotTable::Format(), which you can use for this purpose.

PivotTable::FormatAll() applies the style to the entire pivot table, while PivotTable::Format() applies the style to a single cell of the pivot table.

The following sample code loads the sample Excel file (
pivot_format.xlsx
) that contains two pivot tables and demonstrates how to format the entire pivot table as well as individual cells in the pivot table.

You can set different pivot table options using Aspose.Cells. One such option is “For empty cells show”. By setting this option, all empty cells in a pivot table are displayed as a specified string.

Setting Pivot Table Option in Microsoft Excel

To find and set this option in Microsoft Excel:

Possible Usage Scenarios

Sometimes you want to customize the Pivot Total, Sub Total, Grand Total, All Items, Multiple Items, Column Labels, Row Labels, Blank Values text as per your requirements. Aspose.Cells for C++ allows you to customize the globalization settings of the pivot table to deal with such scenarios. You can also use this feature to change the labels to other languages like Arabic, Hindi, Polish, etc.

Customize Globalization Settings for Pivot Table

The following sample code explains how to customize globalization settings for the pivot table in C++. It creates a class CustomPivotTableGlobalizationSettings derived from the base class PivotGlobalizationSettings and overrides all necessary methods. These methods return customized text for various pivot table elements. The code then assigns this implementation to the WorkbookSettings.GetPivotSettings() property. The example loads a source Excel file, refreshes the pivot data, and saves it as output PDF. The screenshot below shows customized labels in the output.

Aspose.Cells provides the PivotTable.IsExcel2003Compatible property, which you can use to specify whether the PivotTable is compatible with Excel2003 while refreshing the PivotTable. If true, a string must be less than or equal to 255 characters, so if the string is greater than 255 characters, it will be truncated. If false, a string will not have the aforementioned restriction. The default value is true.

Specify whether the PivotTable is compatible for Excel2003 while refreshing PivotTable

The following sample code explains the usage of the PivotTable.IsExcel2003Compatible property. The original string is 383 characters long. However, when the PivotTable.IsExcel2003Compatible property is set to true and the pivot table is refreshed, the data in cell B5 of the pivot table is truncated to 255 characters. Conversely, when the property is set to false and the pivot table is refreshed again, the data in cell B5 is not truncated and remains 383 characters long. Please read the comments inside the code for a better understanding of this property.

Pivot table‑based reports are useful but prone to errors if end users do not have detailed knowledge of Excel to configure these reports. In these circumstances, organizations will want to restrict users from being able to change a pivot table‑based report. Common pivot table features, such as adding additional filters, slicers, fields, or changing the order of items in the report, are not recommended for all users. However, these users must also be able to refresh the report and use existing filters or slicers. Aspose.Cells provides this ability to developers for restricting users from changing these reports while creating them. For this purpose, Excel provides a feature to disable the pivot table ribbon, and the same feature is provided by Aspose.Cells. Developers can disable the ribbon that contains controls to modify these reports.

Disable Pivot Table Ribbon using PivotTable.EnableWizard

The following code demonstrates this feature by accessing a pivot table from a sheet and then setting the GetEnableWizard() method to false. A sample pivot table file can be downloaded from this link.
