Possible Usage Scenarios

Aspose.Cells APIs provide the facility to render spreadsheets in image formats as well as convert them to PDF and XPS formats. To maximize conversion fidelity, it is necessary that the fonts used in the spreadsheet are available in the operating system’s default font directory. If the required fonts are not present, Aspose.Cells APIs will attempt to substitute the required fonts with the ones available.

Selection of Fonts

Below is the process that Aspose.Cells APIs follow behind the scenes:

The API tries to find the fonts on the file system matching the exact font name used in the spreadsheet.

If the API cannot find the fonts with the exact same name, it attempts to use the default font specified under the Workbook’s DefaultStyle.Font property.

If the API cannot locate the font defined under the workbook’s DefaultStyle.Font property, it attempts to use the font specified under PdfSaveOptions.PaginatedSaveOptions(PaginatedSaveOptions_Impl impl)* or ImageOrPrintOptions.DefaultFont property.

If the API cannot locate the font defined under PdfSaveOptions.PaginatedSaveOptions(PaginatedSaveOptions_Impl impl)* or ImageOrPrintOptions.DefaultFont property, it attempts to use the font specified under FontConfigs.DefaultFontName property.

If the API cannot locate the font defined under FontConfigs.DefaultFontName property, it attempts to select the most suitable fonts from all of the available fonts.

Finally, if the API cannot find any fonts on the file system, it renders the spreadsheet using Arial.

Set Custom Font Folders

Aspose.Cells APIs search the operating system’s default font directory for the required fonts. If the required fonts are not available in the system’s font directory, the APIs search through custom (user‑defined) directories. The FontConfigs class provides several ways to set custom font directories, as detailed below:

FontConfigs.SetFontFolder: This method is useful if there is only one folder to be set.

FontConfigs.SetFontFolders: This method is useful when the fonts reside in multiple folders, and the user wishes to set all folders separately rather than combining all fonts in a single folder.

FontConfigs.SetFontSources: This mechanism is useful when the user wishes to load fonts from multiple folders, a single font file, or font data from an array of bytes.

Both FontConfigs.SetFontFolder and FontConfigs.SetFontFolders methods accept a Boolean‑type second parameter. Passing true as the second parameter will direct the Aspose.Cells APIs to search the subfolders for the font files.

Please use any of the above‑mentioned methods at the start of the application, that is, before invoking any other objects of Aspose.Cells APIs.

If all of the above‑mentioned methods are used to set the font sources, only the last settings will take effect.

Font Substitution Mechanism

Aspose.Cells APIs also provide the ability to specify substitute fonts for rendering purposes. This mechanism is helpful when a required font is not available on the machine where the conversion has to take place. Users can provide a list of font names as an alternative to the originally required font. To achieve this, the Aspose.Cells APIs have exposed the FontConfigs.SetFontSubstitutes method, which accepts two parameters. The first parameter is of type string, which should be the name of the font that needs to be substituted. The second parameter is an array of type string. Users can provide a list of font names as a substitution for the original font name (specified in the first parameter).

Here is a simple usage scenario:

Information Gathering

In addition to the above‑mentioned methods, the Aspose.Cells APIs also provide means to gather information on what sources and substitutions have been set:

FontConfigs.GetFontSources method returns an array of type FontSourceBase containing the list of specified font sources. If no sources have been set, the FontConfigs.GetFontSources method will return an empty array.

FontConfigs.GetFontSubstitutes method accepts a parameter of type string, allowing you to specify the font name for which substitution has been set. If no substitution has been set for the specified font name, the FontConfigs.GetFontSubstitutes method will return null.

Advanced Topics

Set Default Font while rendering spreadsheet to images

Sometimes, you need to present worksheet images in applications or web pages. For example, you might need to insert images into a Word document, a PDF file, a PowerPoint presentation, or some other document. Basically, you want to render a worksheet as an image so that it can be pasted into other applications. Aspose.Cells allows you to convert Microsoft Excel worksheets to images.

Remove Whitespace around Data

The SheetRender API converts a worksheet to an image file with any specified attributes, for example, image format, paginated sheets, etc. Several image formats are supported, including BMP, GIF, JPG, TIFF, and EMF.

When you use the sheet‑to‑image feature, the output image has whitespace—that is, a border—around it by default. You can remove this by setting the top, bottom, left, and right page‑setup margins for the source worksheet to 0 and specifying the ImageOrPrintOptions attributes accordingly.

The following code snippet removes the whitespace around the data in the output image.

Possible Usage Scenarios

Generally, you specify the fonts directory or a list of fonts for all workbooks, but sometimes you need to specify an individual or private set of fonts for your workbooks. Aspose.Cells provides the IndividualFontConfigs class that can be used to specify the individual or private set of fonts for your workbook.

Specify Individual or Private Set of Fonts for Workbook Rendering

The following sample code loads the sample Excel file with its individual or private set of fonts, which are specified using the IndividualFontConfigs class. Please see the sample font used inside the code as well as the output PDF generated by it. The following screenshot shows how the output PDF looks if the font is found successfully.

Possible Usage Scenarios

You can make an image of a worksheet using Aspose.Cells. However, sometimes you need to export only a range of cells in a worksheet to an image. This article explains how to achieve this.

Export Range of Cells in a Worksheet to Image

To take an image of a range, set the print area to the desired range and then set all margins to 0. Also set ImageOrPrintOptions.GetOnePagePerSheet() to true. The following code takes an image of the range D8:G16. Below is a screenshot of the sample Excel file used in the code. You can try the code with any Excel file.

Screenshot of Sample Excel File and its Exported Image

Executing the code creates an image of the range D8:G16 only.

Gocpp: Page Setup and Printing Options with Golang via C++

Sometimes, developers need to configure page setup and print settings to control the printing process. Page setup and print settings offer various options and are fully supported in Aspose.Cells.

This article shows how to create a console application in Visual Studio, and apply page setup and printing options to a worksheet with a few simple lines of code using the Aspose.Cells API.

Working with Page and Print Settings

For this example, we created a workbook in Microsoft Excel and used Aspose.Cells to set page setup and print options.

Using Aspose.Cells to set Page Setup Options

First create a simple worksheet in Microsoft Excel. Then apply page setup options to it. Executing the code changes the Page Setup options as in the screenshot below.

Output file.

Create a worksheet with some data in Microsoft Excel:

Open a new workbook in Microsoft Excel.

Add some data.

Set page setup options:
Apply page setup options to the file. Below is a screenshot of the default options, before the new options are applied.

Default page setup options.

Download and install Aspose.Cells:

Download Aspose.Cells for Go via C++.

Install it on your development computer.
All Aspose components, when installed, work in evaluation mode. The evaluation mode has no time limit and it only injects watermarks into produced documents.

Create a project:

Start Visual Studio.

Create a new console application.
This example will show a C++ console application.

Add references:

This example uses Aspose.Cells, so add a reference to that component to the project. For example:
…\Program Files\Aspose\Aspose.Cells\Bin\Net1.0\Aspose.Cells.dll

Write the application that invokes the API:

Setting Print Options

Page setup settings also provide several print options (also called sheet options) that allow users to control how worksheet pages are printed. They allow users to:

Select a specific print area of a worksheet.

Print titles.

Print gridlines.

Print row/column headings.

Achieve draft quality.

Print comments.

Print cell errors.

Define page ordering.

The example that follows applies print options to the file created in the example above (PageSetup.xls). The screenshot below shows the default print options before new options are applied.

Input document

Executing the code changes the print options.

Output file

This document is designed to provide developers with a detailed understanding of how to convert a worksheet to an image file and a worksheet with multiple pages to an image file per page.

Sometimes, you might need to present worksheets as images, for example, to use them in applications or web pages. You might need to insert the images into a Word document, a PDF file, a PowerPoint presentation, or use them in some other scenario. Simply put, you want to render the worksheet as an image. Aspose.Cells supports converting worksheets in Microsoft Excel files to images. Also, Aspose.Cells supports converting a workbook to multiple image files, one per page.

You might use Office Automation to achieve this, but Office automation has its own drawbacks. There are several reasons and issues involved: for example, security, stability, scalability/speed, price, and features. In short, there are many reasons, but the main one is that Microsoft themselves strongly recommends against Office automation.

Using Aspose.Cells to Convert Worksheet to Image File

This article shows how to create a console application in Visual Studio, convert a worksheet to an image, and convert a worksheet into a separate image for each page with a few simple lines of code using the Aspose.Cells API.

You need to include the Aspose.Cells.Rendering namespace in your program/project. It has several valuable classes, such as SheetRender, ImageOrPrintOptions, WorkbookRender, and so on. The Aspose.Cells.Rendering.SheetRender class represents a worksheet for rendering images and has an overloaded ToImage method that can convert a worksheet to image files directly with any attributes or options set. It can return a
System.Drawing.Bitmap
object, and you can save an image file to the disk/stream. Several image formats are supported, for example, BMP, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, TIFF, EMF, and others.

This article explains how to:

Convert a worksheet to an image

Convert every page in a worksheet to an image

The task shows how to use Aspose.Cells to convert a worksheet from a template workbook to an image file.

Setup Project

First, download Aspose.Cells for Go via C++.

Install it on your development computer. All Aspose components, when installed, work in evaluation mode. The evaluation mode has no time limit and it only injects watermarks into produced documents. Now start Visual Studio and create a new console application. This example uses a C++ console application. Add a reference to Aspose.Cells in the created project.

Convert Worksheet to Image File

I created a new workbook in Microsoft Excel and added some data in the first worksheet: Testbook.xlsx (1 worksheet). Next, convert the template file’s worksheet Sheet1 to an image file called SheetImage.jpg.

Following is the code used by the component to accomplish the task. It converts Sheet1 in Testbook.xlsx to an image file to demonstrate how easy this conversion is.

Using Aspose.Cells to Convert Worksheet to Image File by Page

This example shows how to use Aspose.Cells to convert a worksheet from a template workbook that has several pages to one image file per page.

Convert Worksheet to Image by Page

I created a new workbook in Microsoft Excel and added some data in the first worksheet: Testbook2.xlsx (1 worksheet).

Now, convert the template file’s worksheet Sheet1 to image files (one file per page). As I already created the console application to perform the copy task, I will skip those console application creation steps and directly move to the worksheet conversion steps.

Following is the code used by the component to accomplish the task. It converts Sheet1 in Testbook2.xlsx to image files by page.

This document is designed to provide a detailed understanding of how to convert a worksheet to an image file and apply different image and print options for the image, such as resolution, TIFF compression, image format, and page quality.

Saving Worksheets to Images - Different Approaches

Sometimes, you might require presenting your worksheets as a pictorial representation. You may need to present the worksheet images in your applications or web pages, insert them into a Word document, a PDF file, a PowerPoint presentation, or use them in some other scenario. Simply put, you want a worksheet rendered as an image so that you can use it elsewhere. Aspose.Cells supports converting worksheets in Excel files to images. Additionally, Aspose.Cells supports setting different options like image format, resolution (both vertical and horizontal), image quality, and other image and print options.

You might consider Office Automation, but it has its own drawbacks. There are several reasons and issues involved, such as security, stability, scalability, speed, price, and features. In short, there are many reasons, with the top one being that Microsoft itself strongly recommends against Office automation from software solutions.

This article shows how to create a console application in Visual Studio, perform the conversion of a worksheet to an image using a few simple lines of code with different image and print options using Aspose.Cells API.

You need to include the Aspose.Cells.Rendering namespace in your program/project. It has several valuable classes, for example, SheetRender, ImageOrPrintOptions, WorkbookRender, etc.

The Aspose.Cells.Rendering.SheetRender class represents a worksheet to render images for the worksheet. It has an overloaded ToImage method that can directly convert a worksheet to image file(s) specified with your desired attributes or options. It can return a bitmap object, and you can save an image file to the disk/stream. Several image formats are supported, such as BMP, PNG, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, EMF, and so on.

Using Aspose.Cells to Convert Worksheet to Image using ImageOrPrint Options

Creating a Template Workbook in Microsoft Excel

I created a new workbook in MS Excel and added some data in the first worksheet. Now, I will convert the template file’s worksheet “Sheet1” to an image file “SheetImage.tiff” and will apply different image options like horizontal and vertical resolutions, TIFF compression, etc.

Download and Install Aspose.Cells

First, you need to download Aspose.Cells for Go via C++. Install it on your development computer. All Aspose components, when installed, work in evaluation mode. The evaluation mode has no time limit and only injects watermarks into produced documents.

Create a Project

Start Visual Studio and create a new console application. This example will show a C++ console application.

Add References

This project will use Aspose.Cells. So, you have to add a reference to the Aspose.Cells component in your project. For example, add a reference to
...\Program Files\Aspose\Aspose.Cells for Go via C++\Bin\Aspose.Cells.lib
.

Convert Worksheet to an Image File

Conversion Options

It is possible to save specific pages to an image. The following code converts the first and second worksheets in a workbook to JPG images.

Image Conversion using WorkbookRender

A TIFF image can contain more than one frame. You can save the whole workbook to a single TIFF image with multiple frames or pages:

Possible Usage Scenarios

If the sheet is empty, then Aspose.Cells will not print anything when you export the worksheet to an image. You can change this behavior by using ImageOrPrintOptions.GetOutputBlankPageWhenNothingToPrint() property. When you set it to true, it will print the blank page.

Output Blank Page when there is Nothing to Print

The following sample code creates an empty workbook that has an empty worksheet and renders the empty worksheet to an image after setting the ImageOrPrintOptions.GetOutputBlankPageWhenNothingToPrint() property to true. Consequently, it generates a blank page, as there is nothing to print, which you can see in the image below.

Gocpp: Convert Excel to High‑Resolution Image with Golang via C++

With the increasing prevalence of high‑resolution screens, images generated at the default 96 DPI often appear blurry and unclear. To ensure clarity on high‑resolution screens, it’s essential to generate images at a higher DPI. Aspose.Cells offers functionality to set ImageOrPrintOptions.GetHorizontalResolution() and ImageOrPrintOptions.GetVerticalResolution(), allowing you to create high‑quality images from Excel files that look sharp on high‑resolution displays.

It can be useful to generate thumbnails from worksheets. A thumbnail is a small image that can be pasted into a Word document or a PowerPoint presentation to give a preview of what’s on the worksheet. It can be added to a webpage with a link to download the original document and has a host of other uses.

Aspose.Cells for Go via C++ allows you to output worksheets to image files, making thumbnail generation straightforward. The following sample code demonstrates how to output worksheets to image files using C++.

Possible Usage Scenarios

You can render a sequence of pages of your Excel file to images by using Aspose.Cells with ImageOrPrintOptions.GetPageIndex() and ImageOrPrintOptions.GetPageCount() properties. These properties are useful when there are many, e.g., thousands of pages in your worksheet, but you want to render only some of them. This will not only save processing time but also reduce memory consumption of the rendering process.

Render Sequence of Pages using PageIndex and PageCount Properties of ImageOrPrintOptions

The following sample code loads the sample Excel file and renders only pages 4, 5, 6, and 7 using the ImageOrPrintOptions.GetPageIndex() and ImageOrPrintOptions.GetPageCount() properties. Microsoft Excel users can add images to spreadsheets. With Aspose.Cells, it’s possible to read images from Microsoft Excel files and save them to a local drive. This article shows how.

The sample code below shows how to extract images from an Excel file and save them.

Gocpp: Create Transparent Image of Excel Worksheet with Golang via C++

Sometimes, you need to generate an image of your worksheet as a transparent image. You want to apply transparency to all cells that have no fill colors. Aspose.Cells provides the ImageOrPrintOptions.GetTransparent() property to apply transparency to the worksheet image. When this property is false, cells with no fill colors are drawn in white, and when it is true, cells with no fill colors are drawn as transparent.

In the following worksheet image, transparency has not been applied. The cells with no fill colors are drawn in white.

Output without transparency: the cell background is white

While in the following worksheet image, transparency has been applied. The cells with no fill colors are transparent.

You can use Aspose.Cells to export your worksheet or chart into an image with the desired width and height. It provides the ImageOrPrintOptions.SetDesiredSize() method to set the desired width and height of the exported image. The width and height are specified in pixels.

The following code exports the worksheet into an image with 400×400 size.

Gocpp: Render Worksheet to Graphic Context with Go

Aspose.Cells can now render a worksheet to a graphic context. The graphic context can be anything such as an image file, a screen, or a printer. Please use one of the following two methods to render a worksheet to a graphic context.

SheetRender::ToImage(int pageIndex, Graphics g, float x, float y)*

SheetRender::ToImage(int pageIndex, Graphics g, float x, float y, float width, float height)*

The following code illustrates how to use Aspose.Cells to render a worksheet to a graphic context. Once you execute the code, it will render the entire worksheet, fill the remaining empty space with a blue color in the graphics context, and save the image as the OutputImage_out.png file. You can use any source Excel file to try this code. Please also read the comments inside the code for better understanding.
