## **Overview**

A placeholder is a shape that reserves a position for a particular kind of content in a presentation template. Common examples are title, body, picture, chart, and general-purpose content placeholders. Unlike an ordinary shape, a placeholder can inherit its position, size, formatting, and other settings from a layout slide or master slide.

Aspose.Slides exposes placeholder information through the [Shape.getPlaceholder](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/shape/#getPlaceholder) method. The method returns a [Placeholder](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholder/) object or `null` for a normal shape. Use [Placeholder.getType](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholder/#getType) to determine what the placeholder is intended to contain.

The shape class still matters after you know the placeholder type:

- An empty text, picture, chart, or content placeholder is commonly represented by an [AutoShape](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/autoshape/).
- A populated picture placeholder can be represented by a [PictureFrame](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/pictureframe/).
- A populated chart placeholder can be represented by a [Chart](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/chart/).
- A content placeholder can contain several kinds of content. Check both [Placeholder.getType](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholder/#getType) and the runtime shape class instead of assuming that every placeholder is an [AutoShape](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/autoshape/).

{{% alert color="warning" title="Warning" %}}
[Placeholder.getType](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholder/#getType) describes a placeholder's role; it does not guarantee the shape's runtime type. Always use a type check before accessing text, picture, chart, table, or media-specific members.

## **Understand Placeholder Inheritance**

Placeholders form a hierarchy:

1. A master slide defines reusable styles and, in some cases, master-level placeholders.
2. A layout slide defines the arrangement used by one or more normal slides and can inherit from the master.
3. A normal slide contains the placeholders for that slide and can inherit from its layout.

Call [Shape.getBasePlaceholder](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/shape/#getBasePlaceholder) to move one level up this hierarchy. A slide placeholder normally returns its layout placeholder; a layout placeholder can return its master placeholder. The method returns `null` when the shape has no base placeholder.

The following example lists placeholders on the first slide and reports their base placeholders:

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
function getShapeClassName(shape) {
    if (java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IAutoShape")) {
        return "AutoShape";
    }
    if (java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IPictureFrame")) {
        return "PictureFrame";
    }
    if (java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IChart")) {
        return "Chart";
    }
    return "Shape";
}
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const slide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const shapes = slide.getShapes();
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder == null) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholderType = placeholder.getType();
        const shapeClassName = getShapeClassName(shape);
        const slidePlaceholderMessage = "Slide placeholder: " + placeholderType + "; shape class: " + shapeClassName;
        console.log(slidePlaceholderMessage);
        const layoutPlaceholder = shape.getBasePlaceholder();
        if (layoutPlaceholder != null) {
            const layoutPlaceholderInfo = layoutPlaceholder.getPlaceholder();
            const layoutPlaceholderType = layoutPlaceholderInfo == null ? null : layoutPlaceholderInfo.getType();
            const layoutPlaceholderMessage = "  Layout placeholder: " + layoutPlaceholderType;
            console.log(layoutPlaceholderMessage);
            const masterPlaceholder = layoutPlaceholder.getBasePlaceholder();
            if (masterPlaceholder != null) {
                const masterPlaceholderInfo = masterPlaceholder.getPlaceholder();
                const masterPlaceholderType = masterPlaceholderInfo == null ? null : masterPlaceholderInfo.getType();
                const masterPlaceholderMessage = "  Master placeholder: " + masterPlaceholderType;
                console.log(masterPlaceholderMessage);
            }
        }
    }
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

Editing a placeholder on a normal slide creates or changes a local override for that slide. Editing the related layout or master can affect all slides that still inherit that setting. A local ordinary shape has no base placeholder and does not begin inheriting merely because it occupies the same coordinates.

## **Change Text in a Placeholder**

Title, centered-title, subtitle, body, and text placeholders normally support text. Check for [AutoShape](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/autoshape/) before using its [getTextFrame](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/autoshape/#getTextFrame) method.

This example updates the first title placeholder on the first slide and saves the result:

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const slide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const shapes = slide.getShapes();
    let titleShape = null;
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        if (!java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IAutoShape")) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder == null) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholderType = placeholder.getType();
        if (placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Title || placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.CenteredTitle) {
            titleShape = shape;
            break;
        }
    }
    if (titleShape == null) {
        throw new Error("The first slide does not contain a title placeholder.");
    }
    titleShape.getTextFrame().setText("Quarterly Business Review");
    presentation.save("title-placeholder-updated.pptx", aspose.slides.SaveFormat.Pptx);
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

This pattern avoids treating picture, chart, table, or media placeholders as [AutoShape](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/autoshape/) objects. It also identifies the placeholder by purpose instead of relying on a fragile shape index.

## **Set Prompt Text on a Layout**

Prompt text is the design-time instruction displayed in an empty placeholder, such as *Click to add title*. Set custom prompt text on the layout placeholder rather than trying to reach it through a normal slide's shape collection. Access the layout through [Slide.getLayoutSlide](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/slide/#getLayoutSlide) and iterate over the collection returned by [BaseSlide.getShapes](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/baseslide/#getShapes).

The following example changes the title and subtitle prompts on the layout used by the first slide:

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const firstSlide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const layoutSlide = firstSlide.getLayoutSlide();
    const shapes = layoutSlide.getShapes();
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        if (!java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IAutoShape")) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder == null) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholderType = placeholder.getType();
        if (placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Title || placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.CenteredTitle) {
            shape.getTextFrame().setText("Enter a concise slide title");
        } else if (placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Subtitle) {
            shape.getTextFrame().setText("Enter a subtitle or reporting period");
        }
    }
    presentation.save("custom-placeholder-prompts.pptx", aspose.slides.SaveFormat.Pptx);
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

Prompt text is not normal slide content. It is intended for empty placeholders in editing applications such as PowerPoint. Once a user or program supplies real content, the prompt is no longer displayed. Changing a prompt also does not replace existing text on slides that use the layout.

## **Update a Picture Placeholder**

There are two cases to handle:

- If the picture placeholder is already populated and represented by a [PictureFrame](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/pictureframe/), replace the image through [PictureFrame.getPictureFormat](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/pictureframe/#getPictureFormat), [PictureFillFormat.getPicture](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/picturefillformat/#getPicture), and [Picture.setImage](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/picture/#setImage).
- If it is still an empty placeholder, add a picture frame at the placeholder's coordinates with [ShapeCollection.addPictureFrame](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/shapecollection/#addPictureFrame) and remove the empty placeholder.

The next example supports both cases and saves the presentation:

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("picture-template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const slide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const shapes = slide.getShapes();
    let picturePlaceholder = null;
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder != null && placeholder.getType() === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Picture) {
            picturePlaceholder = shape;
            break;
        }
    }
    if (picturePlaceholder == null) {
        throw new Error("The first slide does not contain a picture placeholder.");
    }
    const sourceImage = aspose.slides.Images.fromFile("replacement.png");
    try {
        const image = presentation.getImages().addImage(sourceImage);
        if (java.instanceOf(picturePlaceholder, "com.aspose.slides.IPictureFrame")) {
            picturePlaceholder.getPictureFormat().getPicture().setImage(image);
        } else {
            const x = picturePlaceholder.getX();
            const y = picturePlaceholder.getY();
            const width = picturePlaceholder.getWidth();
            const height = picturePlaceholder.getHeight();
            const frameX = java.newFloat(x);
            const frameY = java.newFloat(y);
            const frameWidth = java.newFloat(width);
            const frameHeight = java.newFloat(height);
            shapes.addPictureFrame(aspose.slides.ShapeType.Rectangle, frameX, frameY, frameWidth, frameHeight, image);
            shapes.remove(picturePlaceholder);
        }
    } finally {
        sourceImage.dispose();
    }
    presentation.save("picture-placeholder-updated.pptx", aspose.slides.SaveFormat.Pptx);
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

The replacement created for an empty placeholder is a local picture frame, not a new placeholder, because [Shape.getPlaceholder](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/shape/#getPlaceholder) does not provide a setter. It keeps the reserved position but no longer inherits placeholder-specific behavior. If retaining the placeholder relationship is essential, prepare and populate the placeholder in PowerPoint first, then update the resulting [PictureFrame](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/pictureframe/) with Aspose.Slides.

For image transparency, cropping, and other picture-specific effects, see [Manage Picture Frames](/slides/nodejs-java/picture-frame/). Those operations belong to the picture frame or picture fill, not to placeholder metadata.

## **Work with Chart and Content Placeholders**

A populated chart placeholder can be represented by a [Chart](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/chart/). This example finds such a chart by both placeholder type and runtime class, changes its title, and saves the file:

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("chart-template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const slide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const shapes = slide.getShapes();
    let placeholderChart = null;
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        if (!java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IChart")) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder != null && placeholder.getType() === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Chart) {
            placeholderChart = shape;
            break;
        }
    }
    if (placeholderChart == null) {
        throw new Error("The first slide does not contain a populated chart placeholder.");
    }
    placeholderChart.setTitle(true);
    placeholderChart.getChartTitle().addTextFrameForOverriding("Quarterly Revenue");
    presentation.save("chart-placeholder-updated.pptx", aspose.slides.SaveFormat.Pptx);
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

A general content placeholder usually has [PlaceholderType.Object](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholdertype/#Object). In PowerPoint it acts as a launcher for several content types, including charts, tables, diagrams, pictures, and media. After it has been populated, inspect the actual shape class to learn what it contains. Specialized layouts can also expose [PlaceholderType.Chart](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholdertype/#Chart), [PlaceholderType.Table](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholdertype/#Table), [PlaceholderType.Picture](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholdertype/#Picture), [PlaceholderType.Media](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholdertype/#Media), or [PlaceholderType.Diagram](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholdertype/#Diagram).

Aspose.Slides does not convert an empty [AutoShape](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/autoshape/) placeholder into a [Chart](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/chart/) merely by changing [Placeholder.getType](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/placeholder/#getType); the type cannot be changed through the object. To fill an empty chart or content area programmatically, add the required object at the placeholder's coordinates and then remove the empty placeholder. The following example does that for a chart:

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("content-template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const slide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const shapes = slide.getShapes();
    let targetPlaceholder = null;
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder == null) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholderType = placeholder.getType();
        if (placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Chart || placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Object) {
            targetPlaceholder = shape;
            break;
        }
    }
    if (targetPlaceholder == null) {
        throw new Error("The first slide does not contain a chart or content placeholder.");
    }
    const x = targetPlaceholder.getX();
    const y = targetPlaceholder.getY();
    const width = targetPlaceholder.getWidth();
    const height = targetPlaceholder.getHeight();
    const chartX = java.newFloat(x);
    const chartY = java.newFloat(y);
    const chartWidth = java.newFloat(width);
    const chartHeight = java.newFloat(height);
    const chart = shapes.addChart(aspose.slides.ChartType.ClusteredColumn, chartX, chartY, chartWidth, chartHeight);
    chart.setTitle(true);
    chart.getChartTitle().addTextFrameForOverriding("Quarterly Revenue");
    shapes.remove(targetPlaceholder);
    presentation.save("content-placeholder-replaced-with-chart.pptx", aspose.slides.SaveFormat.Pptx);
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

The added chart is an ordinary local chart. It occupies the placeholder's area but does not inherit from the layout placeholder. Use the dedicated [chart management articles](/slides/nodejs-java/powerpoint-charts/) when you need to replace its categories, series, or workbook data.

## **Complete Example: Update Text or Image Content**

The following end-to-end example opens a template, searches the first slide for either a title or picture placeholder, checks the placeholder and shape types, updates the appropriate content, and saves the output. The example deliberately avoids assuming a shape index or treating every placeholder as the same class.

```javascript
const aspose = { slides: require("aspose.slides.via.java") };
const java = require("java");
const presentation = new aspose.slides.Presentation("template.pptx");
try {
    const slides = presentation.getSlides();
    const slide = slides.get_Item(0);
    const shapes = slide.getShapes();
    let updated = false;
    for (let i = 0; i < shapes.size(); i++) {
        const shape = shapes.get_Item(i);
        const placeholder = shape.getPlaceholder();
        if (placeholder == null) {
            continue;
        }
        const placeholderType = placeholder.getType();
        const isTitlePlaceholder = placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Title || placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.CenteredTitle;
        if (isTitlePlaceholder && java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IAutoShape")) {
            shape.getTextFrame().setText("Quarterly Business Review");
            updated = true;
            break;
        }
        if (placeholderType === aspose.slides.PlaceholderType.Picture) {
            const sourceImage = aspose.slides.Images.fromFile("replacement.png");
            try {
                const image = presentation.getImages().addImage(sourceImage);
                if (java.instanceOf(shape, "com.aspose.slides.IPictureFrame")) {
                    shape.getPictureFormat().getPicture().setImage(image);
                } else {
                    const x = shape.getX();
                    const y = shape.getY();
                    const width = shape.getWidth();
                    const height = shape.getHeight();
                    const frameX = java.newFloat(x);
                    const frameY = java.newFloat(y);
                    const frameWidth = java.newFloat(width);
                    const frameHeight = java.newFloat(height);
                    shapes.addPictureFrame(aspose.slides.ShapeType.Rectangle, frameX, frameY, frameWidth, frameHeight, image);
                    shapes.remove(shape);
                }
            } finally {
                sourceImage.dispose();
            }
            updated = true;
            break;
        }
    }
    if (!updated) {
        throw new Error("No supported title or picture placeholder was found on the first slide.");
    }
    presentation.save("placeholder-content-updated.pptx", aspose.slides.SaveFormat.Pptx);
} finally {
    presentation.dispose();
}
```

## **FAQ**

**What is a base placeholder?**

A base placeholder is the corresponding shape on the layout or master from which another placeholder inherits. Use [Shape.getBasePlaceholder](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/nodejs-java/aspose.slides/shape/#getBasePlaceholder) to retrieve it. An ordinary local shape returns `null` because it is not part of the placeholder hierarchy.

**Can I change all slide titles by editing a layout placeholder?**

You can change inherited formatting or prompt text through a layout, but existing title content is stored on the normal slides. To replace actual title text across a presentation, iterate over the slides and update each title placeholder.

**How do I manage date, slide-number, header, and footer placeholders?**

Use the header and footer managers at the appropriate slide, layout, master, notes, or handout scope. See [Manage Presentation Header and Footer](/slides/nodejs-java/presentation-header-and-footer/) for complete examples.
