# Convert PPT to PPTX in Python

## **Overview**

PPT is the legacy binary PowerPoint format, while PPTX is the newer Open XML format. Aspose.Slides for Python via Java can load a PPT file and save it as PPTX without Microsoft PowerPoint. This article shows how to convert one file or a directory of files and explains what to verify after conversion.

Each example starts the Java virtual machine if needed and releases the presentation after use. Replace the example paths with your own file or directory paths.

## **Convert a PPT File to PPTX**

Load the source file with the [Presentation](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/python-java/aspose.slides/presentation/) class, then call [Presentation.save](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/python-java/aspose.slides/presentation/#save) with [SaveFormat.Pptx](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/python-java/aspose.slides/saveformat/#Pptx). The `finally` block disposes of the presentation and releases its resources.

The file extension does not select the output format by itself; the [SaveFormat.Pptx](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/python-java/aspose.slides/saveformat/#Pptx) argument does. Keep the input and output paths different if you need to retain the original PPT file.

## **Convert Multiple PPT Files**

The following example converts every `.ppt` file in one directory. Each file is processed independently, so one failed conversion does not stop the rest of the batch.

For production workloads, log the complete exception, decide whether an existing output file may be overwritten, and write failed file names to a retry or review queue. Corrupt files, password-protected files opened without the required password, inaccessible paths, and unsupported content can all cause a conversion to fail. ## **Fidelity and Legacy Features**

Conversion normally preserves slides, masters, layouts, text, shapes, images, tables, and charts. However, PPT and PPTX do not represent every feature in exactly the same way. A legacy feature that has no PPTX equivalent, or is not supported by the library, may be normalized, omitted, or displayed differently.

Check the converted file when it contains animations, transitions, embedded or linked OLE objects, ActiveX controls, embedded media, uncommon fonts, or VBA macros. A plain PPTX file is not a macro-enabled format, so use an appropriate macro-enabled workflow when VBA must remain available. Also verify that required fonts and external resources are present in the environment where the converted presentation will be opened or rendered.

For important documents, reopen the generated PPTX programmatically and inspect key slide counts and content, then compare its appearance and slide-show behavior in the intended viewer. Do not treat a successful [Presentation.save](https://reference.aspose.com/slides/python-java/aspose.slides/presentation/#save) call as proof that every legacy feature has an exact PPTX representation.

## **When to Use PPTX**

Use PPTX when the presentation will be edited in current PowerPoint versions, exchanged with systems that work with Open XML packages, or stored in a format that is easier to inspect and recover than legacy binary PPT. Keep the original PPT as an archival or rollback copy until the converted presentation has passed your fidelity checks.
